Setting up a Split URL experiment

Step-by-step: prerequisites, setting the origin URL and variant URL, traffic split, publishing, and QA.

Before you start

  • The variant page must be live and published in Shopify, reachable at an absolute https:// URL on your store, before you publish the experiment — variant visitors land on it immediately.

  • Cooee's theme app extension must be enabled so tracking works on both the origin and variant pages.

  • Know the canonical path of your origin page (e.g. /pages/black-friday or /products/shoe) — that is what you'll enter as the Origin URL.

Step 1 — Create the experiment

  1. In Cooee, go to ExperimentsNew experiment

  2. Select Split URL

  3. Enter a Name and Hypothesis, choose a Primary metric, then click Create

Step 2 — Set the Origin URL (Control arm)

  1. Open the Control arm

  2. Enter the Origin URL — the page path the test runs on. Use the canonical path (e.g. /products/shoe), not a collection-nested one like /collections/summer/products/shoe

Matching is exact — no wildcards. Only visitors who land on this page are entered into the test; control visitors stay here.

Step 3 — Set the Variant URL (Variant arm)

  1. Open the Variant arm

  2. Enter the Variant URL — the absolute https:// destination the variant cohort is sent to

  3. Rename the arm if it helps (e.g. "Curated LP"), and set the traffic split (50/50 is recommended for the fastest result)

Step 4 — Publish

Click Publish. Cooee begins redirecting variant-assigned visitors as soon as they land on the origin page.

QA your setup

  • Open the origin page in a fresh private/incognito window and confirm you either stay (control) or get redirected to the variant URL

  • Use a normal browser — automated/bot traffic is excluded from assignment

  • Because assignment is sticky, clear the site's data (or use a new private window) between checks to see a fresh assignment

Don't change either page mid-test — editing the origin or variant while the experiment runs muddies the comparison.
