Troubleshooting Google Analytics 4

Fixes for missing experience_impression events, empty or missing audiences, a full property and a broken connection.

No experience_impression events reach GA4

Cooee sends its events through the Google tag (gtag.js) on your storefront pages. Check, in order:

  1. The Google tag is on the page itself. Open your store, open the browser console and type typeof gtag. It should print "function". If it prints "undefined", GA4 is not loaded on the page, which is common when it runs only through Shopify's Google & YouTube app or another customer-events pixel, or only through Google Tag Manager. Cooee cannot send events from inside those. Add the Google tag to your theme, or contact us and we'll check your setup with you.

  2. The right web stream is chosen. The Google Analytics 4 card in Settings → Integrations should say Connected, with the measurement ID (G-…) your storefront's tag uses.

  3. An experiment is live. Cooee sends events only for live experiments.

  4. Analytics cookies are allowed. Events go through your own tag, so your cookie banner applies to them. If you declined analytics cookies while testing, GA4 receives nothing from you.

To see events arrive, open the store in a private window and look at Realtime or Admin → DebugView in GA4.

An audience shows no users

  • GA4 takes 24–48 hours to fill a new audience.

  • Check that events reach GA4, as above.

  • GA4 can hide small numbers (data thresholds), for example when Google signals is on.

An experiment has no audiences

  • Automatic creation for experiments is off, or the experiment was already live when you connected GA4. Click Create GA4 audiences on the experiment's page.

  • Your property was full. The panel shows Not created — property full. Archive audiences you no longer need in GA4, then click Create GA4 audiences.

  • The experiment isn't live. Only a live experiment gets audiences.

The card says Reconnect needed

Google no longer accepts Cooee's access. Someone removed Cooee from the third-party connections of their Google Account, or that account lost access to the property. Cooee cannot create or archive audiences until you reconnect. Events keep reaching GA4 in the meantime, as they go through your own tag.

Click Reconnect and sign in with a Google account that has the Editor role on the property. Your settings are kept. If the new account cannot see the property you chose before, choose it again.

Your property isn't in the list

Cooee can list only the properties the connected Google account can access. Ask a GA4 administrator to give that account the Editor role under Admin → Property access management, then click Choose property again. If the card says the account cannot see any GA4 property, disconnect and connect with another account.

"This property has no web data stream"

Add a web data stream for your store in GA4 under Admin → Data streams, then choose the property again.

"Cooee needs permission to manage GA4"

The permission was declined on Google's screen. Click Connect again and allow Edit Google Analytics management entities. Cooee needs it to create audiences.

More experience_impression events than expected

Cooee sends experience_impression on every page view, once for each live experiment the visitor is in. That way a visitor who accepts cookies partway through a visit still joins the audience on their next page. GA4 counts each visitor once in an audience, however many times the event is sent.

The events do count toward your property's event volume. That matters if you export GA4 to BigQuery (standard properties are limited to 1 million exported events a day) or pay for GA4 360 by volume. Cooee sends nothing while no experiment is live.
