Template experiment use cases

Ideas for what to test on product, collection, homepage, landing, blog, and cart pages.

Written by Shashank Agrawal

Template experiments change the content areas of a page — sections, layout, imagery, and copy — without touching your global design. Here are the ideas merchants reach for most, by page type.

Product pages

The most popular use case. Small changes near the buy button often move conversion the most.

  • Move reviews or ratings above the fold

  • Add a sticky add-to-cart bar on scroll

  • Try a different image gallery — single image vs. grid vs. carousel

  • Add trust signals (shipping, returns, guarantees) near the price

  • Switch product info between tabs and a single stacked layout

  • Add or remove app blocks — size charts, countdown timers, bundles

  • Remove distracting sections to shorten the path to purchase

Collection pages

Often the first page a shopper lands on from an ad or search.

  • Change the grid density — 3, 4, or 5 columns

  • Try larger vs. smaller product images

  • Add a featured banner or promo row between products

  • Show or hide quick-add buttons on cards

  • Move or restyle filters and sorting

  • Show or hide review stars on cards

Homepage

Sets the tone for the whole store.

  • Test different hero sections and calls-to-action

  • Reorder sections

  • Add or remove sections — video, blog feed, newsletter signup

  • Compare a focused layout against a longer, comprehensive one

  • Try full-width vs. split hero layouts

Landing pages

For Shopify page templates behind paid or seasonal traffic.

  • Short, focused pages vs. longer multi-section pages

  • Different hero layouts and CTA placement

  • Add or remove trust signals

  • Product-first vs. education-first structure

  • Seasonal vs. evergreen content

Blog and article pages

  • Add product recommendation sections

  • Test content width — with vs. without a sidebar

  • Move CTAs inline vs. an end-of-article banner

  • Compare related articles against a featured collection

Cart page

If your store uses a cart page rather than a drawer.

  • Add urgency or free-shipping-threshold messaging

  • Simplify the layout to reduce distractions

  • Add cross-sell / upsell sections

  • Move the checkout button

App blocks

Measure the real impact of the apps on your pages.

  • Add or remove a review widget and compare

  • Test where a size chart or bundle block sits

  • Remove a loyalty or badge block to see if it helps or hurts

Tip: keep each experiment to one clear hypothesis. Testing several changes at once tells you whether something moved but not what caused it.
